時代、時代の道は外さない

自分の楽しみやトクを考えない
Seek not pleasure for its own sake
どんなことにも依存心を持たない
Avoid likes and dislikes
自分のことより、世のことを深く思う
Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world
生涯、欲望にとらわれない
Detach from desire
自分のしたことは、後悔しない
Avoid regret
善悪の判断に、他人を妬む心は挟まない
Avoid jealousy
違う道を選んだ人との別れや、心離れを悲しまない
Do not be saddened by separation
自分にも人にも、恨みや責任転嫁の気持ちを持たない
Resentment and complaint are useless
恋慕の情に、心とらわれることはない
Lust and love are false guides
物に対して、いちいち好き嫌いはない
In all things, have no preference
自分の住む家に、あれこれ望みはない
Be indifferent to where you live
必要以上に贅沢な食事はいらない
Do not pursue the taste of good food
代々伝える立派な道具など持たない
Do not hold on to possessions you no longer need
自分が持っている物を忌み嫌うこともない
Do not act following customary beliefs
武具は別だが、他の道具は特にこだわらない
Do not collect weapons or practice with weapons beyond what is useful
武士道においては、死は恐れることではない
Do not fear death
年老いた身に財産や所領を貯め込もうと思わない
Do not seek to possess beyond what you need now
神仏は尊敬するが、神仏頼みではない
Respect Buddha and the Gods without counting on their help
たとえ死んでも、名誉は捨ててはいけない
Abandon your body but preserve your honor
常に兵法の道を離れず、武士として生きる
